Hiding Behind Hope

Hope is often celebrated as one of our greatest strengths. We are taught to hold on to it, fight for it, and never lose it. But what if not all hope leads us forward? What if some forms of hope quietly keep us standing still?

There is a kind of hope that whispers, "Maybe one day things will be the way they used to be." Not because the future is calling you... but because the past still feels safer than the unknown.

Maybe you hope you'll look the way you once did. Have the energy you once had. Carry fewer responsibilities. Feel the freedom of your younger years. Maybe you're hoping life will somehow circle back to a version of itself that no longer exists.

The shadow loves this kind of hope. It disguises itself as optimism while anchoring you to a chapter that has already ended. You convince yourself you're being patient when, in reality, you're postponing acceptance. The unknown isn't always bright. Sometimes the future feels dark simply because no one has walked you through it before.

There is no map. No certainty. No guarantee that what lies ahead will be better than what you've left behind. Every ending is a kind of death.

The shadow mistakes darkness for danger when, in reality, darkness is simply the space between who you've been and who you're becoming. Transformation is often born in places your eyes have not yet adjusted to.

So the shadow bargains.

"Maybe if I wait long enough..."

"Maybe if I hold on just a little longer..."

"Maybe things will go back to normal."

Cycles aren't meant to imprison us. Ignore them, and they repeat. Witness them, and they transform you.

There may have been a time when you finally learned to appreciate what you had. You smiled more than you frowned. You became grateful. You did it right this time.

And still...

That season ended.

Not because you failed.

But because its purpose had been fulfilled. The shadow doesn't always resist change through fear. Sometimes it resists through hope. Not hope for what could be... but hope for what once was. Sometimes the only thing standing between you and your next beginning, is the belief that the last ending was the best thing you would ever have.

The truth is, we aren't always grieving what we've lost. Sometimes we're grieving the certainty of knowing who we used to be. The past feels safe because we've already survived it. The future asks us to become someone we've never been.

🌘 The Residual Reflection

Before you continue reading, pause and sit with these questions.

  • What am I still hoping will return?

  • If it returned exactly as it was, would it truly fulfill who I am today?

  • Am I holding on because I miss it...or because I fear who I must become without it?

  • What ending have I refused to grieve?

  • What emotion have I been avoiding by continuing to wait?

  • What part of me believes it cannot survive this ending?

Be honest.

The shadow loses its power the moment it is seen.

🌑 Shadow Ritual

Working with the Residuals

Find a quiet place where you won't be interrupted.

Bring a journal.

Take three slow, intentional breaths.

Imagine yourself standing between two paths.

Behind you is the life you've known.

Ahead of you is a path disappearing into the unknown.

On a blank page, create three columns.

Column 1: Residual Wisdom

What lessons, strengths, boundaries, and truths deserve to come with me into this next season?

Column 2: Residual Wounds

What fears, protective behaviors, limiting beliefs, or emotional patterns no longer serve me?

Column 3: Residual Weight

What expectations, identities, comparisons, regrets, or stories am I carrying simply because I don't know how to put them down?

When you've finished writing, read your Residual Weight aloud.

Then say:

"Thank you for protecting me during that season. Your purpose in my life is complete. I release you with gratitude and make space for who I am becoming."

Finally, ask yourself one last question:

If I stopped waiting for my old life to return... what would I be free to begin today?

Don't search for the perfect answer. Choose one small action that belongs to your future.

Send the application.

Make the call.

Sign up for the class.

Clear the drawer.

Take the walk.

Write the first page.

Whatever it is...

let it belong to the person you are becoming, not the person you're trying to recover.

Closing Invitation

The shadow is not your enemy. It is the part of you that loved so deeply, fought so fiercely, and survived so completely that it cannot imagine life beyond what it already knows. Honor that part of yourself. Thank it for carrying you through the season that shaped you. Then remind it that survival is no longer the assignment. Living is.

Every cycle leaves residuals. Some are wisdom meant to travel with you. Some are wounds asking to be healed. Some are weight asking to be released. Your responsibility is not to carry everything. It is to discern what belongs in your next chapter. Renewal isn't found by waiting for yesterday to return. It begins the moment you stop asking the past for permission to become someone new.

Walk anyway. Your next cycle isn't waiting for a better version of who you were. It's waiting for the truest version of who you're becoming.

The Residual

Every ending leaves a residual.

Every residual carries a lesson.

Every lesson is an invitation to renewal.

With Love,
